Discoveries of New York Foodies!

Apple Festival at Queens County Farm Museum

This past weekend I visited Queens County Farm Museum for their Annual Apple Festival in Glen Oaks, NY. Upon entering the enormous gated farm, many families followed behind us while others seemed to just be leaving. Across the field were various food stands with lines too dramatically long to describe. The aroma of fresh popped and roasted corn caressed my senses as we ventured deeper into the farm. We followed the signs pointing to the Apple Festival but not before making a quick stop at the sand art table. One of many activities for children and adults to enjoy on the slightly windy yet cool Sunday afternoon.

Food stands boasted signs of sweet roasted corn on the cob, followed by the sounds of an ice cream truck stationed along a gloriously adorned truck specializing in fried foods. Fried potato on a stick, deep-fried apples, corn dogs, funnel cakes and even one of my all time favorites, fried Oreos. After photographing the customers enjoying their deep-fried goodies I quickly walked away, far away from the temptation.

One stand I ordered from offered fried clams, shrimp, calamari, chicken fingers and of course french fries smothered in nacho cheese sauce. After enjoying some nicely seasoned yet soggy fries covered in cheese and listening to my brother-in-law regret his fried shrimp with tartar sauce, we ran away from the pestering bees (careful to not swat them) and made our way towards the animals.

The beautiful ponies seemed to almost pose for me, nudging each other in opposite directions, I’m assuming to try to get their most photogenic side. The sun delicately kissed our faces as we smiled at the animals who seemed to not mind our presence. Butterflies danced around us as we approached the pigs, chickens, goats and even a quick moving turtle. The children squealed in excitement as they attempted to pet the animals while holding  their parents. A gloriously perfect afternoon for parent and child alike.

While the parents picked various kinds of apples from giant wooden containers, the children joined in on the egg and potato sack races falling over one another gleaming with their painted faces. Although I searched through out the farm, I did not get to see the Nation’s biggest apple cobbler nor taste the finished product as promised.  We left with a bottle of sand art, a sack full of apples and an appetite sufficiently satisfied. It was most definitely the ideal Autumn afternoon for a family event. Petting zoo, face painting, children’s races, a giant corn maze, hay rides, along with an assortment of food options to satisfy any palate. I recommend this event for families with young children and even couples to just enjoy the sound of children’s laughter with a side of family friendly fun.
