Serious Soul Food
I’m writing from our nation’s capital, Washington, DC, where finding good food is not an issue… Thank God…
Next time you are in D.C. and looking for a good soul food meal where calories are not an issue, try the Florida Avenue Grill. It has been around since 1944 and looks like they haven’t changed a thing. It was founded by Lacey Carl Wilson, Sr., and his wife Bertha, now run by their son, Lacey Carl Wilson, Jr. The walls are filled with pictures of famous fans, and there is a long counter that is reminiscent of old diners.
The staff was amazingly gracious yet quick to respond and serve. What caught my attention was that my waitress not only served me with a smile, but also flipped our eggs. Goodness! She compelled us to tip her twice the norm, considering she still found time to come back and check on us every few minutes with a warm smile! It really is a place to go when you want comfort and good food.
There is an extensive menu but if you don’t see what you want, don’t be afraid to ask! They may just surprise you.
If you like soul food and are from NYC, this eatery is similar to the Pink Tea Cup in the Village.
