Discoveries of New York Foodies!

La Fonda del Jibarito

I visited this restaurant twice during my tens days in Viejo San Juan.  It’s a small restaurant that is very respected for authentic Puerto Rican cuisine.   It borders on being a dive; but it usually serves great food. It’s pretty much always crowded.

The beefsteak & onions, oven baked pork, and pastelle (see my post “Puerto Rican Cuisine for an explanation) are done reasonably well.  The grilled chicken is what you would have gotten anywhere in the US.  Unfortunately, the sancocho was salty disappointment.  The flan was not made to my taste,  but it was still edible.  If you go with a large group or need to speak to someone that speaks English, be sure to ask for Angel.  He’s wonderful!

  1. Love the flavors of Puerto Rican dishes…sounds like a great place. Sometimes those little dive types are the best :)
