Discoveries of New York Foodies!

CSA Central

Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) connect individuals with local farms.  CSA organizations allow city dwellers to have direct access to quality, fresh produce grown by local farmers.   Members purchase a “share” of vegetables from the farmer. On a weekly or bi-weekly basis, from June until November, the farmer delivers the shares of produce to a convenient drop-off neighborhood location.   CSA members pay for an entire season of produce upfront (typically $300-$500).  Most CSA’s also offer half shares.  The early payment enables the farmer to plan for the season, purchase new seed, make equipment repairs, and more.  We found this wonderful video to explain.

If you are looking for a CSA in your own New York City neighborhood, visit Just FoodJust Food also offers great tools for those interesting in creating a new CSA.  Check out Local Harvest for CSA’s nationwide.

Being a locavore is not just about getting the freshest produce to your home.  Restaurants are also utilizing local sustainable sources.  Check our next post on the Lunching Locavore!
