Hidden Island
The Island’s is the type of place that you don’t tell your friends about because it is ssssssooooooooooooo sssmmmaaaallllllll! If there were five people inside, it would be too crowded. If you don’t know to look for it, you might just walk right on by because the store front looks about eight feet wide. The Islands is located in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn, on Washington Avenue, right off Eastern Parkway, steps from the entrance to the Brooklyn Museum and the Brooklyn Botanic Gardens. (Don’t bother going during Brooklyn Museum’s First Saturday. You’ll probably never get near the front door…)
The staff is so nice and welcoming that it’s like you are visiting with relatives. (Relatives that you like!) But please note that this place borders on being a real dive. There is no kind of flare or ambiance or even comfortable seating here. If you have issues with steep stairs, don’t bother sitting in their version of a dining room. Just take it to go! But then again, you don’t go to The Islands for ambiance or comfort. You go there for EXCELLENT authentic Jamaican home-cooked food. Period! From jerk chicken to oxtail to curry goat and even fish are all great. The menu changes with the mood of the chef so come with an open mind and an appetite , because the portions are crazy big. The food is served on platters, and the platters are full… Prices are in the $12 range for entrees.
