Notable Nana

Before I get into what Nana’s is today, please let me you a little but about the history of the actual commercial space…

Nana’s, or rather the space, used to be split into two small businesses, a bodega on the left called, “La Gran Parada” in the 70′s  to early 80′s, then a tattoo parlor in the early 90′s.  Finally, the owners of Nana’s came in and showed them how it should really be done.  I think they have been around for close to 10 years now.  I know this because I grew up and still live about 2 blocks away…

One of the most notable aspects of Nana’s is the decor and ambiance  Nana’s occupied the entire first floor of 155 5th Avenue, in Park Slope.  I think it was one of the first restaurant’s in the area to take a double space.  Due to the brownstone layouts, most businesses occupy long narrow spaces.  From outside, it looks like a dining room on the left and a bar on the right of the entry to the apartments above.    You will  note the wonderful doors at all of the entrances.  Even insisted the entry door to the apartments  are uniform with those of the business.  I’m guessing they are about 9′ high.  Lovely…  Then please note the high glossed cement floors with river rocks that were creatively used as base board mouldings.  The kitchen and bathrooms are placed in the basement.  A beautiful outdoor dining area with its own handmade copper-pipe water fountain is located in the back yard.  A DJ plays great dance music on the weekends. There is something about this space that, esthetically,  just works really well for me… Like a great pair of jeans… You can dress it up or dress it down and all is still good…

This is where you should go when you crave something Asian, but with a twist.  They  have several  typical dishes, like sushi, and fried rice.  However, they have a Butter Crispy Ipoh Squid… Wonderful!  Grilled Tiger Shrimp in cilantro and carrot sauce.  In case you do not know, I can inhale cilantro! I love anything cilantro.  The Asian Fusion selection is quite extensive.   All types of fruit are mixed in all kinds of lovely ways, with the vegetables, fish, chicken, and beef.  And prices are just as good!  Appetizers are from $3 to $7!  Entrees are from $10 to $17.  They have curry, vegetarian, noodles, sushi, sashimi, specialty rolls, etc., etc., etc!  Yay for etc!!!!  Please note that they only accept CASH!!!!!

Have a great day and Happy Eating!
