Discoveries of New York Foodies!

Discovering Dave

I must confess that I am a bit of a barbecue snob.  I have held the family title of chief pit master since my teenage years.  (Frankly, no one else wanted to spend hours standing at our massive grill in NYC humid summers.)  I have developed a number of secret sauces and ingenious techniques that put most chain barbecue restaurants in the shade.  As a result, I rarely dine at barbecue restaurants.  When a co-worker took me to Famous Dave’s for lunch, I decided to go with the flow.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the service was excellent and the food was fairly good.  A couple items really stood out.  First, the cole  slaw was fresh, crisp and tasty; not the typical coleslaw found at a chain. Then, the Devil’s Spit and Georgia Mustard sauces caught my attention.  Both  had nice flavor profiles and complemented the smoked meats very well.  Finally,  the pina coladas, both the standard and non-alcoholic version, were definitely worth a return trip.

While chain-restaurant barbecue still does not rank high on my list of cuisines, Famous Dave’s is certainly worth a return trip.

  1. I’ve had Pina Coladas on the brain lately, so this strikes a chord with me. Think I’d rather come to your place for the food though ;)
