Big Apple BBQ Block Party 2010

If you are into BBQ and looking for something cool to do this weekend, Saturday, June 12th and Sunday, 13th, you might want to consider the 8th Annual Big Apple Barbecue Block Party in Madison Square Park, New York City, from 11am to 6pm.  This is one of only a few street festivals that I attend religiously every year…  It can be seriously good!!!

The Pitmasters get treated like celebrities and they come from all over the country.  Admission is free and it is $8 per plate per pitmaster.  They have a FastPass for $125 but I have never seen a need for it, so if you have purchased it and swear you wouldn’t attend without it, please let me know.  Maybe I’ll consider it for next time.

The festival gets really crowded and the lines can be a bit long but I have always had interesting conversations with the other BBQ Lovers on line so even though I am definitely one of those NY’ers that hates to do lines, I don’t ever seem to mind here.  It’s part of the experience.  I use the time to ask those around me about which pitmaster is really grilling their best that day and strategize my next plate.  And go hungry!  And last but not least, do yourself a favor and don’t wear white and brings lots of wipees!  You will need them!

Rack-N-Soul and Dinosaur BBQ are usually amazing and Blue Smoke usually doesn’t disappoint with dessert either.  And go early!  The really good vendors rarely make it till 6pm and still have food.
