Some of the best food in any city in the world can be found on the street. The food sold by street vendors can really give you an immediate insight into the people who live and work in a city, and New York is no exception. New York’s food vendors are celebrated each year in the Vendy Awards competition which recognizes great street food vendors. The event will be held at the Queens Museum of Art on September 26th and tickets are still available. The Vendy Awards is a fundraiser to support the Street Vendor Project of the Urban Justice Center, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that provides a voice for the thousands of people who sell food and merchandise on the streets of our city.
If you can’t make it to the Vendy Awards or the ticket price is out of reach, the Astor Center has a less expensive alternative on September 20th. (The best part is that most of the finalists will be lined up outside the Astor Center so you can try most of them all in one spot.) This year’s finalists prepare cuisine from China, India, Jamaica, Mexico and the Middle East.
I will try out each finalist before the awards and render my own decision on the best street vendor for 2009. Look for future posts on what I discover. Find the purple/blue pins on our map or the Vendy Award website for locations. You may cast your vote for a finalists below, or write in your favorite street vendor in the comments! I would love to hear from you!
that’s so funny, I’ve seen the rickshaw vendy a lot around the city!
You should give them a try. Maybe they will win your vote!
What a fun idea!
Thanks a lot for sharing this, I found it really interesting to watch! I think I might have to put these up on my blog and link to you
Good luck deciding, they all look so good!
Thanks! It is a lot of fun trying each vendor even if you have to travel all over the city to do it. There may be a similar competition in your city.
Cheers !
thak you for sharing!
That’s so cool! I wish they had more street vendors in Sydney! Ahh, so jealous! Have fun sampling all the goodies
